Digital Media - Sept. 29th Class

What did we do this week that we could use in the classroom or personally? How did making my podcast go?

I felt that this week was very action packed. I liked that we were able to have some time to explore and set up Twitter and Delicious. I thought that social bookmarking was really neat and could save a lot of time. I am thinking of using it with my kindergarteners when they become more familiar with the computer and the sites we use regularly. My only concern is that they will be able to get into my other personal sites by accident. Once I tag all of my kid links to Delicious I am going to put it onto one of my classroom computers and see how much access my students have. If it just stays at the kids links that would be great but it might pose a problem if they can access my personal links on Delicious as well. I am anxious to see how it works and very glad to hear that Delicious works in our district...thanks Su.

Twitter was fun in class but is not something that I would use in my classroom or personally.

I liked all of the different ways to make a podcast or screencast. I originally thought that it was going to be really hard and time consuming but I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it actually was. I tried out a few this week with my students and am thinking of trying a screencast in the near future.

Today I experimented with both GCast and SightSpeed. First I attempted SightSpeed as did other colleagues of mine. Since my computer does not have a camera and the software cannot be downloaded to my classroom computers I had to use Crystal's computer to make the podcast. The first time I tried it did not work at all and I got an error message (this was yesterday) so I tried it again today and it worked right away. The student that I worked with had a good time and was anxious to see himself reading the story. If I choose to use this program again I would take more time when completing the actual podcast. This time I just wanted to try it out to see how it worked. This is something that I would love to use with my students and share with their families but I need to get a computer with a camera first or have access on our classroom computers.

Then I tried the GCast with all of my students (27 kindergarteners). They had such a blast that they wanted to do it 2 times. It was so simple and quick. The song was a bit muffled due to me moving around. It actually sounded liked the children were screaming at times but they really weren't. I think this would be an excellent tool to use with my students. I am actually thinking of using it to give directions to projects so I do not have to say them 100 times (haha). The kids can just come and click on the button and listen to them if they get lost.

I really liked both of these tools and plan on using them again in my classroom!
